Blog Entries from www.languageandliteracy.org

As part of the series Reading for Life, Foundations' President and CEO Rhonda H. Lauer shares her expertise and insights about grade level reading. The following blog entries explore connections between literacy and digital learning.

Reading for Life: Teens, Tweens, and Technology
Excerpt: "Today's young people ages 8 to 18 years use entertainment media (computers, television, video games, etc.) an average of 53+ hours per week; that's 7 hours and 38 minutes every day. Instead of bemoaning such statistics, let's embrace this reality. Modern technology and digital media afford educators a unique opportunity to engage tweens and teens in more active, participatory learning. With technology, we can help young people follow their passions and interests, prepare for college and careers, and learn in real time along with like-minded peers living across the country or even across the globe."

Reading for Life: Technology for Reading - It's Elementary!
Excerpt: "These schools are part of a national trend. The Thomas B. Fordham Institute reports that digital learning has quickly expanded in the United States in the past decade, from 40,000-50,000 students in 2000 to an estimated 3 million students in 2010. Convincing young children to use the devices is easy; most are already familiar with them, intrigued by them, and excited to use them. As a recent report from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop notes, the challenge comes in ensuring that the educational applications they use are high-quality and developmentally appropriate, sustain their interest, and engage them in learning."

Reading for Life: Entertainment Media
Excerpt: "Kids of all ages, even preschoolers, love electronic and digital media: video games, the Apple i's (Pod, Phone, Touch, Pad), television, computers. As I noted in an earlier blog, youth spend, on average, more than 7 ½ hours a day, seven days a week, interacting with media. That's a lot of time. The Joan Ganz Cooney Center and the 2011 Leadership Forum embrace this youthful affinity for technology and seek to use it for good, to enhance literacy and learning."
